Manga Adaptation

Devil beside you was based on a manga by Mitsuba Takanashi "Akuma de Sourou" aka "The Devil Does Exist".

Characters

  • Qi Yue/Quinee: Qi Yue is a sweet and innocent sophomore in college who lives with her widowed mother. She is very shy and sometimes clueless, but she has a loyal and kind heart that shines even through the toughest of times. She harbors a crush on the captain of the basketball team, Yuan Yi, but her life was turned upside-down by Ahmon. Eventually, she falls out of love with Yuan Yi and starts developing feelings for Ahmon. She constantly worries about him and their relationship being discovered. Qi Yue is also one of the managers of the basketball team. although it hurts for her to accept that jiang meng was her future brother she still continue to love the devil boy.
  • Jiang Meng/Bryan: Nicknamed Ah Meng and Ahmon by his fellow peers, he is the son of the president of the school. He is a freshman at the college, yet he has power of his teachers due to his father's position. Ahmon is also frightening to a lot of people and is known to bully girls, yet he is also known as the "prince of seduction." Despite his cool composure and "bad" attitude, Ahmon has a gentle side and often sticks up for what is right. Li Xiang has a crush on him, which he does not reciprocate, but Ahmon has feelings for Qi Yue. Although she is his future stepsister, he does love her and enjoys teasing her. He knows that she loves him but gets jealous when he finds out that there are new people that are pursuing her. Ahmon also joins the basketball team and has faster reflexes that rival Yuan Yi's. Ah Meng also has a little brother.
  • Shang Yuan Yi/Louie: Yuan Yi is a boy in Qi Yue's class (teasingly nicknamed "Ah Yi (Auntie in Chinese)", and is the captain of the basketball team. Qi Yue is initially in love with Yuan Yi for his gentle personality. Yuan Yi reciprocates her feelings and they become a couple. When Qi Yue falls in love with Ahmon, she breaks up with Yuan Yi, wishing not to lead him on. Yuan Yi is angry and hostile towards Ahmon at first, but gets over it and realizes his feelings for Qing Zi after she kisses him he admitS that he has feelings towards Qi Yue but he also knows he has no more chance because of Ahmon..

  • Qing Zi/Lizette: Qing Zi is Qi Yue's outspoken best friend. She and Xiao Cai are the ones who encourages Qi Yue to confess her love to Yuan Yi, even though Qing Zi herself had a crush on him. Qing Zi cares for Qi Yue a lot and spends a lot of effort in helping her. After Qi Yue and Yuan Yi break up, Qing Zi starts dating Yuan Yi. Qing Zi and Yuan Yi's relationship is tested when Qing Zi feels that Yuan Yi is spending more time playing basketball than being with her. Feeling dejected, she meets with a stranger she chatted with online. She later gets into a tussle with him and Yuan Yi comes to her rescue instead of playing in the team's basketball match. When her father gets a new job, he forces her to emigrate with him, taking her away from Yuan Yi and her friends. Yuan Yi, in order to keep her with him, challenges her father, a skilled swordsman.
  • Xiao Cai : Xiao Cai is Qi Yue and Qing Zi's friend. She and Qing Zi were the ones who supported Qi Yue to confess her love to Yuan Yi. Unlike Qing Zi, Xiao Cai appears to be more calm. She also alerted Yuan Yi of Qing Zi's escapade with the stranger because she was worried about Qing Zi's safety.
  • Yuan Chuan Rang/Allan: He is nicknamed Ah Rang and the little brother of Ah Meng. Their father tried desperately to forget about him, and naming Ah Meng as the successor of the company. Ah Rang follows and stalks Qi Yue everywhere, trying to force her and blackmail her to like him, who in turn, does everything she can to stop him. He tries to ruin Ah Meng's name, and puts Ah Meng and Qi Yue in lots of danger. He is later softened by Qi Yue, who later feels sorry for him and reaches out to him, and becomes more open. Ah Rang actually really looks up to Ah Meng and sees him as a hero, and actually cares deeply about him. He also tried to act like him, which causes him to get bullied and beaten up in school. Ahmon then teaches him how to protect himself and fight the boys who bulied him. His mother chose him instead of Ah Meng when his parents divorced, causing Ah Meng to envy his younger brother. Ah Meng would often ignore him and never look at him, and act coldly toward him. Ah Rang is also being helped by the university president's assistant who is in love with Ah Rang's mother, who does not reciprocate that love. Plus, Ah Meng had accidentally shoved Ah Rang into a vase that had severely injured and cut his neck when they were young, which was the reason for his hate. Because of this injury, he usually is weak and can collapse due to breath failure. [He has asthma] After a "fake" attack, he and Ah Meng rekindle their relationship and become brothers once more.
  • Meidi/Nikki: A girl who Ahmon saved when she dropped her glasses in the middle of a road. He took her to an optician and bought new glasses for her. She never got a good sight of him as she broke her glasses, but she fell in love with him. Coincidentally, Ahmon's grandmother arranged a marriage for him and Meidi to try to break Ahmon and Qi Yue apart. She is well-sheltered because everyone thinks she is cute and innocent due to her appearance. Ahmon is the only person, besides blunt Li Xiang, that didn't give her what she wanted which is one of the reasons she loves him so much. She also has anemia that causes her to be dependent on chocolate, notably Ferrero Rocher, so she always carries a box in her bag. She likes to give out the chocolates to thank people for their kindness.
  • Li Xiang/Tricia: In high school, she was an anti-social girl and acted snotty to all the girls in the class. Whenever she got bullied, Ahmon would protect her. Li Xiang has also developed a crush on Ahmon, calling him "Prince". She would do anything to get Ahmon to notice her, she would even go as far as hiring girls to beat her up so Ahmon could "save" her. Finally she realizes that this is not the way to get him to love her. Yang Ping had a crush on her and she then starts to have feelings for him and goes out with him.
  • Yang Ping/Junjun: Yang Ping is Ahmon's best friend who supports him. He used to be mocked by the middle school basketball teacher because he was overweight and he could not play well. Ahmon was quite defensive and protective over him and he beat up the teacher. This lead then to become good friends. He has feelings for Li Xiang, but she has a crush on Ahmon. He is willing to do anything for her, even trying to beat up Qi Yue with a metal pole. Li Xiang then starts to develop feelings for him and they start to go out.
  • Ahsen: Qi Yue's first crush. He was her father's student when they were younger. He studied overseas for some time. And when he came back, he became a substitute for a short while at her college. He also became the coach for the basketball team. Though he has a girlfriend, he harbors feelings for Qi Yue. Once he knows that Qi Yue is not the same girl she used to be and is in a relationship with Ahmon, he then tries to get back his girlfriend.

Summary

The story begins with Qi Yue planning to confess her liking to the basketball team captain, Yuan Yi. She wrote a love letter and plans to pass it to him. Being as careless as only she can be, she has made her confession to the wrong person, who happened to be the school's devil, Ah Meng (her junior, a first year student in school). She is so shocked and embarrassed to see Ah Meng's face that she drops her love letter in front of Ah Meng and runs away. Ah Meng picks up the letter.

Ah Meng is amused by the whole thing and decides to have some fun with Qi Yue. He threatens Qi Yue to print a thousand copies of her love letter and let the whole school know of her liking for Yuan Yi. In order to stop Ah Meng, Qi Yue agrees to be his 'runner'.

With Ah Meng's continuous bullying of Qi Yue, she is driven to stop all the nonsense by confessing her liking to Yuan Yi again. In this way, she will not be afraid of Ah Meng's disclosing the love letter anymore. To Qi Yue's surprise, Yuan Yi has a similar liking for her.

While Qi Yue assumes that the whole ordeal with the devil is going to end, she receives another piece of bad news - her mom is going to marry the school's chairman who is also Ah Meng's father, which means Ah Meng is going to be her stepbrother.

Qi Yue's love letter is being put up on the school notice board and she misunderstands that it is Ah Meng who did it. She confronts him and storms off. After realizing that she has misunderstood Ah Meng, she apologises to Ah Meng and pleads him to hit her so that she feels better - Ah Meng kisses her instead. Yuan Yi happens to see them kissing and confronts their relationship, Ah Meng yells at Yuan Yi, saying that he wants Qi Yue. After Yuan Yi runs away in anger, Qi Yue looks at Ah Meng and begins to sob. After Qi Yue walks away in tears, Ah Meng has a strong feeling of guilt.

Yuan Yi regrets not believing in Qi Yue and returns to her, asking her out on a date. Qi Yue agrees happily. On their first date, they met Ah Meng again. Qi Yue and Ah Meng have some misunderstandings and they went separate ways.

After the date, Qi Yue left for home. After she took her bath, she fainted and was saved by Ah Meng's father. He brings her to his house to take care of her while her mom was away on a trip. Ah Meng and Qi Yue meet again at his house. She knows from Yuan Yi that she has misunderstood Ah Meng again. Seeing Ah Meng has injured his hand, she offers to clean the wounds for him. Sitting on Ah Meng's bed and putting medicine on his hand, she realizes Ah Meng is staring at her intensely and this makes her heart pound. Qi Yue wakes up and finds herself sleeping on Ah Meng's bed. Apparently, both have fallen asleep and Ah Meng's father has carried her to his bed.

Qi Yue finally realizes that the person she likes is Ah Meng. She tells Yuan Yi the truth and walks away. In the evening, she sits alone at the playground, crying softly to herself for hurting Yuan Yi. Ah Meng finds her and comforts her. She takes a ride on Ah Meng's bicycle. They had a minor accident and both fell on the road, unharmed. Qi Yue asks Ah Meng why is it always so dangerous to be with him. Ah Meng replies her that he cannot stop the dangers but he will protect her. Ah Meng kisses Qi Yue passionately on the road.

Due to their relationship as future stepsiblings, they keep their romantic relationship in the dark. Except for some close friends of Ah Meng & Qi Yue, nobody knows of their relationship.

Ah Meng's buddy, Yang Ping, who is in love with Li Xiang, is unhappy to see Ah Meng and Qi Yue together. He wants to get rid of Qi Yue so that Ah Meng can be with Li Xiang. At the school's rooftop, he ambushes Qi Yue and wants to kill her. Li Xiang hesitantly tells Ah Meng of Yang Ping's plan and Ah Meng rushes to Qi Yue's rescue. He beats up Yang Ping and brings Qi Yue home. At home, Qi Yue confesses her liking to Ah Meng and he hugs her, saying that he is happy to know that she likes him.

One fine day, a sweet-looking boy comes to Qi Yue and confesses his liking for her. This shocks Qi Yue and her whole class as he storms into her class and tells her that he likes her and wants her to convey a message to her boyfriend that he wants Qi Yue for himself. His name is Ah Rang.

Yuan Yi casually mentions this to Ah Meng and he storms away in anger. In the evening, he tells Qi Yue that nobody is more confident than him in liking her and she belongs to him only. Qi Yue smiles at his possessiveness.

Qi Yue goes to Da Zhi High School to look for Ah Rang and realizes that he is Ah Meng's younger brother. Yuan Yi tells Ah Meng about this and Ah Meng storms off to look for Qi Yue. At seeing Ah Rang and Qi Yue, he trips Ah Rang and makes him fall to the ground. Ah Meng grabs Qi Yue's arm and walks away. He does not want to talk about his brother at all. Ah Rang is actually harmless, and his only intention is to attract Ah Meng's attention. He longs for his brother's affection. While arguing with Ah Meng, Ah Rang suffers an asthma attack and Ah Meng rushes him to the hospital. Both brothers patch up. Ah Meng was told that Qi Yue fainted in the hospital. Ah Meng runs towards her. At her home, Ah Meng reprimands Qi Yue for being a busybody and tiring herself out, which is the cause of her fatigue. He is concerned about her, which makes Qi Yue happy.

Ah Meng's grandmother suspects that Ah Meng and Qi Yue are seeing each other. She plans to matchmake Ah Meng with a rich girl, Mei Di, which Qi Yue feels sad and uncertain. At the same time, Qi Yue's first love reappears as her school lecturer (Ah Sen). This causes Ah Meng to be jealous and he feels insecure. Ah Meng rejects Mei Di and she left wishing Qi Yue and him happiness. Similarly, Qi Yue tells Ah Sen that she likes Ah Meng and he goes back to his girlfriend.

Following that adventure, Ah Meng and Qi Yue take advantage of their parents' out of town trip to travel to see Qi Yue's father's grave. They get caught in a rain storm and discover that the train is not running. Ah Meng gets a hotel room, but Qi Yue can't stand the tension and makes the trip back home to find her mother waiting for her. She finally confesses that she and Ah Meng are a couple. Since this is going to be a problem for the family, her mother decides that they will have to move out of the house. However, when she faints, they find out that she's pregnant. Though it isn't proper, they decide that they will support Ah Meng and Qi Yue's relationship, and continue their own.

While things seem to be going fine again, Ah Meng's mom comes back and wants Ah Meng to go to Italy with her to pursue his studies. When Ah Meng finally agrees to go with her, Qi Yue is heartbroken. At the playground, Ah Meng tells Qi Yue that she can continue to date other people while he is away but he will always like her only. They embrace. Together, they decided it was time to have their "first time" together. They attend their parents' wedding a few days afterwards.

Later that year, at Christmas time, Qi Yue goes out to get a part for the Christmas Tree that Ah Meng gave her the previous year. While she's out, she's grabbed off the street and blindfolded, thrown in the trunk of a car and taken to another location. It's a prank, orchestrated by Ah Meng's friends. When she takes off her blindfold, Ah Meng is standing in front of her. He tells Qi Yue that he's back and they kiss.

4 Super Junior Members Hospitalized

Four members of the Super Junior's pop star group have been hospitalized after their car flipped in the middle of the road, seriously hurting one of the lead vocals yesterday morning.

Kyu Hyun, Lee Teuk, Shin Dong and Eun Hyuk of the group were returning from a radio station, where they host a show, to their residence in Chongdam-dong when the car suddenly flipped in the middle of Olympic Road in Seoul.

Kyu Hyun is now in the Kangnam St. Mary's Hospital. A doctor said that he is seriously injured, yet able to be operated on. The other three are staying at the Samsung hospital and are being treated.
The group of 13 has canceled its TV appearances for a while.

``At this very moment, the most important thing is the singer's health condition,'' the singers' agent said yesterday.

The police said that there was no evidence of disorder in the automobile and that careless driving may have been the reason for the accident.

Choikang in Korean means “the best;” “Max” became an international rendition of this name. ~from wikipeida.org

Stage Name: Choikang(Max) Changmin
Date of Birth: 18th Febuary’1988
Place of Birth: Seoul
Height / Weight: 188CM / 61KG
Bloodtype: B
Interests: Listening to music, singing
Strengths: Singing, dancing 6th Annual SM Entertainment: Best Youth Competition 1st Place and ‘Best Singing’ Award
When recording TVXQ’s debut single ‘Hug’, Choikang Changmin had something else to worry about other than work. His grandmother, who doted on him the most, was ill at that period of time. Apart from giving his best in his career, he kept worrying about his grandmother’s condition. Changmin had even hurt his vocals during that period of time, due to him practicing their songs hard. But he persevered and finished the recording. ~cassiopeiasg.com
An aquarius born in 1988, his blood type is B. Is greedy when it comes to music, so sometimes cries when he isn’t satisfied with his singing. Because his parents are teachers, he is also very competitive and tries very hard at schoolwork and reading. Though the youngest in the group, he is the most modest and has the deepest thoughts. Can be honest and blunt when he strongly believes that something should not be done. Though shy at first, he is a very bright boy when you get to know him well. Followed his friend to an SM contest and luckily won the Best Singer award.
ChoiKang Changmin, whose high note is outstanding
The youngest of our group Choikang Changmin is a crybaby. When his singing goes wrong he cries. But he has a brave side to him too. Starting from elementary school in 6th grade, he delivered newspapers as a part-time job. Changmin is the youngest in the family and group but noone can complete against his singing. His high note is so outstanding that he doesn’t know what octave it goes up to. He says that hes worries that if he knows it might interrupt his singing. Changmin is a quiet person and doesn’t talk very much. In an interview, he only says 2 or 3 things in the end. Changmin is a clear person who reads the Harry Potter Series and tells everyone about it. He particpated in a singing contest and won an award. That led him to be a singer but before that he was regular student.

6th Starlight Casting System (casted through here)
SBS Saturday’s Here (KangTa, Moon HeeJun’s Showdown of the Century) KangTa’s Team - Lead Vocal
Born on January 1, 1987, he is a capricorn. Has the middle-high vocal part in the group. The group labels him as an innocent and bright boy. On the other hand, he makes a 180 degree change on stage and performs with great charisma. Maintains order and balance in the group when they face difficulty. Possibly because of his long 6 year training, he is very empathetic and thinks a lot about people’s feelings. Plays the piano well and is very poetic — he enjoys writing poems. One of his dreams in life is to have his writing published into a book. One of his motivations in his singing career is the unachieved dream of his mother, who once dreamed of being a star.
Xiah Junsu, who wanted to become an athlete
In our group, there is a member who gets support from girls who were former Miss Koreas. Why? Because Junsu’s mom is a former Miss Korea. I guess Joonsu got his pretty and delicate looks from his mom. Junsu was known in his junior high years to be a good singer. In the morning gatherings, when Junsu sang the school song, it went through the speakers and was heard by the whole school. But Junsu wanted to be a athlete. He was in the baseball and soccer team and he stills likes sports now. But after he saw H.O.T on TV, his dream was to “sing on stage”.

1st Annual SM Best Competition - Best Dancing 1st Place
Born in 1986, he is also an aquarius like Jaejoong. He is the team’s leader and the bass vocal-part of the group. Having too many thoughts being a distinctive character trait of an A-blood type, Yunho also carries this trait. Won the Best Dancer award from SM and is the most talented in dancing. His hobby is to choreograph. Has experience as a rapper from Dana’s 1st album song–Diamond. He likes to play basketball, and is talented in martial arts (hap ki do) for he placed 3rd in a contest. On the other hand, he enjoys writing fictional stories and has diverse thoughts.
DBSG’s oldest member, U-Know YunHo
Yunho is often mistaken for the oldest in the group because he is the leader (Jaejoong is the oldest). As he particpated in the church choir he has the position of the base(the lowest note in male group) in the group. Yunho had a hard time becoming a singer. His father opposed of it. But now his father is the biggest supporter. Yunho is going to study hard and major in music in college. Just by looking at his face, it seems he grew up without any hardship right? Not, before he became a singer, 3 years ago, he left his home at GwangGoo and went to Seoul because he wanted to become a singer. From this time, he prepared to become a singer with YoungWoong Jaejoong. Since both of their circumstances weren’t good they did part-time jobs at law schools and saunas and practiced hard.

Controversy

In November 2008, the Commission of Youth Protection ruled that Mirotic was detrimental to youths and declared that the lyrics were provocative and overly sexual. As a result, the album was labeled with stickers indicating that it was unsuitable for people under 19 years old and any performances of the song would have to be broadcast after 10 PM.[5][72]In response to the ruling, SM Entertainment agreed to make a clean version but also had filed an injunction to overrule the commission's decision“ We will make a clean version in accordance with the commission’s administrative order, but since we cannot fully accept the ruling, we plan to make a provisional disposition with the relevant court to nullify the administrative order.[5] ”

After the Commission of Youth Protection released their statement regarding the ban on the album, SM Entertainment said,“ Even before when the order had been put against Mirotic, we have clearly negotiated and tried to explain the real meaning and explanation of the lyrics, but even after this the results came out unexpectedly and we are bewildered as of this moment. [and] Jumun-Mirotic's lyrical meaning is entirely different and miles away from the erotic or sexual that the association is making it to be.[fn 3][73] ”

TVXQ performed the clean version at the 23rd Annual Golden Disk Awards. The lyrics were changed from "I got you" to "I chose you" and "I got you under my skin" to "I got you under my sky."[5]

In March 2009, the Seoul Administrative Court ruled in favor of SM Entertainment, stating:“ We acknowledge that the lyrics concerned, including "You want me, you give yourself up to me, you’re mad at me" and "I got you under my skin," may imply sexual acts, but they did not describe sexual acts or feelings excessively to the level that can stimulate youths' sexual desire... Even though we acknowledge that the young are more sensitive to sexual stimuli and less able to control sexual urges, the lyrics neither encouraged youth to have sex nor described women as object for sex.[74] ”

On April 9, 2009, the Commission of Youth Protection announced they would appeal the ruling to a high court after having an emergency meeting and deeming that the phrase, "I got you under my skin", was inappropriate for minors.[75]

Lyrics and Composition

The majority of the lyrics and composition to TVXQ's songs are done by their staff. On occasion, the members of the group contribute to the writing of the lyrics and composition. On their second Korean album, Rising Sun, Micky, U-Know, and Xiah wrote the rap lyrics to "Love After Love". For the third Korean album, "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap., Micky wrote the English rap lyrics to "Phantom Hwanyeong" and Xiah wrote and composed "Nae Gyeote Sumsiur Su Ittdamyeon (White Lie)" (네 곁에 숨쉴 수 있다면). Their fourth Korean album, Mirotic, saw an increase in the members' participation: Hero wrote and composed Saranga Uljima (Don't Cry My Lover) (사랑아 울지마), Max wrote the Korean lyrics for "Love in the Ice", Micky wrote and composed Sarang Annyeong Sarang (Love Bye Love) (사랑 안녕 사랑), and Xiah wrote Noeur.. Baraboda (Picture of You) (노을..바라보다).[65][66]

For their third Japanese album, T, Micky wrote "Kiss Shita Mama, Sayonara" (Kissしたまま、さよなら lit. As We Kiss, Goodbye?) and co-composed the song with Hero.[67] Micky also wrote the lyrics for his solo, "My Girlfriend" for the second single in the Trick project, Runaway/My Girlfriend.[68] Xiah composed his solo track, "Rainy Night", for the third single in the Trick project.[69] Hero wrote and co-composed "Wasurenaide" (忘れないで lit. Don't Forget?) and Micky wrote and composed "Kiss the Baby Sky", both songs were included on their twenty-fifth single "Bolero/Kiss the Baby Sky/Wasurenaide", as the last two A-sides.[70][71] The songs later appeared on their fourth Japanese album The Secret Code, along with the song "9095" composed by Hero.

The single topped the Oricon chart, breaking the record that the group had set with their previous single.[54][55] TVXQ attended Kōhaku Uta Gassen Music Festival on New Year's Eve, making them the first Korean group to attend.[56]

Their twenty-fifth single "Bolero/Kiss the Baby Sky/Wasurenaide", released in January 2009, became another number-one for the group.[57][58] In March, TVXQ released their twenty-sixth single "Survivor" which was followed by their fourth Japanese album, The Secret Code, which debuted at #2 on the charts.[59] "Survivor" debuted at #3 on the charts subsequently ending their number-one streak.[60] On April 22, 2009, they released their twenty-seventh single "Share the World/We Are!". The single debuted atop the charts, extending their Oricon record.[61] On July 1, 2009, TVXQ will release their twenty-eighth single, "Stand by U".

In addition to South Korea, they toured in China, Thailand, and Malaysia, making them the first Korean performers to hold a concert in Malaysia.[2] In March, the group released their fourth Japanese single, "Asu wa Kuru Kara" (明日は来るから lit. Because Tomorrow Will Come?), and their debut Japanese album, Heart, Mind and Soul. The album debuted on the weekly Oricon album chart at #25 with 9,554 copies sold.[18] Their fifth Japanese single, "Rising Sun/Heart, Mind and Soul", released a month later, debuted on the Oricon singles chart at #22.[19] To support the album, TVXQ held their first Japanese tour, 1st Live Tour 2006: Heart, Mind and Soul, from May to June.[20]. TVXQ released two more Japanese singles, "Begin" and "Sky". The latter debuted at #6, making it the group's first single to reach the Top Ten.[21][22][23] In the summer, TVXQ performed in Avex's annual A-Nation summer concert.[24]

The group resumed their Korean activities with the release of their third album, "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap. ("O"-正.反.合. lit. "O"-Thesis.Antithesis.Synthesis)[fn 2] in September 2006. Like their previous Korean albums, "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap. debuted atop the charts; with a total of 349,317 copies sold, it became the number-one record of the year.[26][27] Two months after "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap, the group released another Japanese single, "Miss You/"O" - Sei-Han-Gō" (miss you/"O"‐正・反・合 lit. Miss You/"O" - Thesis-Antithesis-Synthesis?), which debuted on the chart at #3, making it their first Top Five single.[28] At the 2006 MKMF Music Festival, TVXQ won four awards, "Best Artist of the Year", "Best Group", "Mnet.com" and "Mnet Plus Mobile People's Choice Award".[29] At the 16th Music Seoul Festival, TVXQ won three awards including a "Daesang" award.[30] The group won another "Daesang" award at the 21st Golden Disk Awards 2006, in addition to a "Bonsang".[31] At the SBS Gayo Awards 2006, TVXQ won another "Daesang" and "Bonsang" award.[32]

TVXQ began 2007 with a new Japanese single, "Step By Step", which was followed by their second Asian tour, The 2nd Asia Tour Concert 'O'.[33] The tour took place in Seoul, Taipei, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai and Beijing.[34] In March, the group released their tenth Japanese single, "Choosey Lover", and their second Japanese album, Five in the Black. Both debuted in the Top 10 of their respective charts, the former at #9 and the latter at #10.[35] In May, the group attended the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards Japan and won the "Best Buzz Asia in Korea" award for their album "O"-Jung.Ban.Hap.[36] From June to December 2007, the group released a string of five singles: "Lovin' You", "Summer: Summer Dream/Song for You/Love in the Ice", "Shine / Ride On", "Forever Love" and "Together". "Summer: Summer Dream/Song for You/Love in the Ice" reached #2 on the Oricon, making it the group's highest-charting Japanese single to that point. TVXQ also collaborated with label-mate Kumi Koda for her thirty-eighth single, "Last Angel", which was used as the theme song for the Japanese release of Resident Evil: Extinction.[37]

2003–2005: Debut

Before their debut, the group was offered three tentative names: O Jang Yukbu (오장육부 lit. The Five Visceras), Jeonseoleul Meokgo Saneun Gorae (전설을 먹고 사는 고래 lit. A Whale That Eats Legends), and Dong Bang Bul Pae (동방불패, the Korean title of Ashes of Time). They decided on Dong Bang Bul Pae; however, the name was rejected because the Hanja was not aesthetically pleasing, and the name was changed to Dong Bang Shin Gi, which was named by Soo-Man Lee's acquaintance.[8]

TVXQ made their debut on December 26, 2003 during a BoA and Britney Spears showcase, where they performed their debut single "Hug" and an a cappella rendition of "O Holy Night" with BoA.[9][10] The group released their debut single "Hug" in January 2004; it peaked at #4 on the monthly charts and sold a total of 169,532 copies, making it the fourteenth best-selling record of the year.[11][12][fn 1] Their second single, "The Way U Are" (July 2004), debuted at #2 spot on the charts, becoming the ninth best-selling-record of the year, selling 214,069 copies.[13][12] TVXQ released their debut album, Tri-Angle (October 2004). Tri-angle debuted atop the charts and sold a total of 242,580 copies, making it the year's eighth best-selling record.[12]

In April 2005, TVXQ debuted in Japan under the Avex sub-label Rhythm Zone with the single "Stay with Me Tonight".[14] They released their second Japanese single, "Somebody to Love", before returning to Korea and releasing their second Korean album Rising Sun. Rising Sun debuted atop the charts and became the fourth best-selling-record of 2005 with a total of 222,472 copies sold.[15]. TVXQ ended the year with two releases: their third Japanese single, "My Destiny", and a Korean single with label-mate Super Junior, "Show Me Your Love". The latter debuted atop the charts and sold 49,945 copies, making it the thirty-fifth best-selling record of the year.[15][16] At the end of the year, TVXQ received the Best Music Video award for the song "Rising Sun" and the People's Choice Award at the 2005 Mnet KM Music Video Festival.[17]

TVXQ

TVXQ (often stylized TVXQ![1] or TVfXQ[2]), an acronym for Tong Vfang Xien Qi[3] (東方神起), is a South Korean boy band quintet formed under SM Entertainment in 2003. In South Korea they are known as Dong Bang Shin Gi[4][5] (동방신기); they were later introduced in Japan as Tohoshinki (東方神起 Tōhōshinki?) under the Avex sub-label Rhythm Zone in 2005. Their name roughly translates as "Rising Gods of the East".[6] Since their debut, TVXQ has become one of the most popular singing groups in East Asia, gaining great popularity in such countries as China, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and other East Asian regions[7]

In 2008, with the release of their sixteenth Japanese single, "Purple Line", which debuted atop the Oricon single chart, TVXQ became the fifth non-Japanese Asian artist and the first male foreign group to have a number-one single on the chart. With their twenty-third single, "Dōshite Kimi o Suki ni Natte Shimattandarō?", TVXQ set a new record, becoming the first foreign artist to have three singles debut atop the chart. In 2009, with the release of their twenty-seventh single, "Share the World/We Are!", TVXQ extended their record, making them the first foreign artist to have six number-one singles on the Oricon.

Super Junior-T is well-known for their parodies, such as the short miniseries Palace T, a parody of the popular Korean drama, Princess Hours which aired on the channel M.NET, as a part of Idol World.[5]

Due to Super Junior-T's active participance in trot music and their comedic appearances, the group gained outstanding attention from the older audience despite their well-known young idol images that was created for them in the main group Super Junior.[11] Members of Super Junior-T explained that they wanted to change their idol appearance[11] and hope that they would gain different fans from their new trot image.

Musical goals

Super Junior-T's music style is a distinctive style of trot, an old-fashioned style of Korean pop music. Their revised style of the genre includes mordernized K-pop melodies and also fast rap, notably performed by Shindong, Eunhyuk, and sometimes Heechul. Super Junior-T's goal is to evade the fading genre in Korea's current music industry and to introduce the young audience to a traditional style of music, hoping to increase awareness of older trot musicians and bring hopeful comebacks of trot to mainstream music. Emergence of Super Junior-T is also due to a strategy that Super Junior has been using, which is to show that they can accommodate many different musical genres.[7]

History

Pre-debut

Noticing the dying trend of trot music, Lee Soo Man decided to revive the style by producing an idol band that capitalizes this genre. Three months before Super Junior-T's official debut, they performed "Don't Go Away" at the M.NET/KM Music Festival on November 25, 2006 with Super Junior's Donghae.

2007: Commercial success

In early February, SM Entertainment made the official announcement of a second Super Junior subgroup, Super Junior-T. The group released their debut single "Rokuko" on February 23, 2007 and on February 25, 2007, they officially debuted on SBS's Popular Songs, performing "Rokuko" and "First Express" with famous trot singer Bang Shilyi. The debut was also marked as Heechul's comeback performance after his injury from a car accident that occurred in August 2006.

"Rokuko" topped music charts three days after release.[2] Two months later, the single topped Thailand-based music stations and remained in the same position for several weeks.[3] By the end of 2007, the single sold almost 46,000 copies and was Korea's best-selling single of the year.

Two months later, Leeteuk, Shindong, and Eunhyuk were injured in a car accident, and all of Super Junior-T's schedules were completely canceled for two months.[4] However, pre-recorded performances, such as the group's parody Palace T, continued to air on television and their single continued to top music charts.[5] Schedules resumed in June, but only lasted a month.

2008: Performance tours and Japan

On April 29, 2008, it was announced that Super Junior-T would make a comeback later in the year with their second single.[6] However, a fourth Super Junior sub-unit, Super Junior-Happy, debuted instead, putting Super Junior-T in partial hiatus. Nonetheless, Super Junior-T remained partially active throughout the year as they still appear as a group in Super Junior's concert tour, Super Show and other similar functions. Despite the debut of Super Junior-Happy, a future full-length album is still in the works and is expected to arrive in the future.[7] Super Junior-T's latest appearance before the debut of Super Junior-Happy was on May 17, 2008, performing as the opening act at the 6th Korean Music Festival in Los Angeles, California.

On November 5, 2008, Super Junior-T re-released "Rokuko", now titled "ROCK&GO," in Japan. Presenting this project to the Japanese comedy duo Moeyan, who are skilled in combining comedy with song and dance, Super Junior-T hopes that the duo will help them localize the single into Japanese. The collaboration was the duo's official debut as singers and Super Junior-T's entrance in the Japanese market.[8] The single debuted at #19 on the Oricon Daily Charts[9] and jumped to #2 three days later.[10] Super Junior-T and Moeyan held two mini concerts on the same release date as the single in the C.C. Lemon Hall at Tokyo to promote the record.
